Das Waldstadion wurde 1937 als Hauptkampfbahn eröffnet. Erst 1974 erfolgte die Umbenennung. Die Haupttribüne wurde 1986 gebaut und die Kapazität sank dadurch von ursprünglich 38.000 auf 21.813 Plätze.
